Overberg Country Roads to Sunday Lunch #2

Driving from Hermanus further South visitors are led to the historical village of Stanford.  Just before reaching the village you are faced with a few choices for a lunch stop.  The first is Sir Robert Stanford Vineyards where wine tasting and bistro style food is offered by Elsa-Marie’s or … if you motor on for about 500 meters you can stop and stay for country fair at Havercroft’s.

Named after the chef-patron Havercroft’s is a small establishment that is big on flavour.  Whilst Brydon is in charge of the kitchen his wife, Innes, is ruling the front of house with witty quips and a watchful eye to make sure glasses are always half full.  A compact menu has only fresh listings of Innes’s favourites. The wine list features local wines from vineyards that are very close.  Regardless of wether you are seated inside or on the intimate veranda it always feels as if you are on a farm, far away from the city hustle. Bookings are essential as this little Overberg gem is not that much of a secret anymore.  My summer salad starter was a colourful plate of fresh goodness while my mains of curried fish had the right amount of bite to liven my palate and work with the Paul Cluver Sauvignon Blanc 2015 for a battle of balance. With no space for dessert I left feeling satisfied and well-fed.  Thinking of my menu choices when I return for more.

Havercroft’s is situated before Stanford on the R43.  Open for lunch from Thursdays to Sunday.  Phone 028 341 0603 to reserve your seat.
