Pitstops to take you from Hermanus to Mossel Bay

The journey from Hermanus to Mossel Bay is a good 3 hours long and far more fun if you choose your stops carefully.  Just outside Hermanus is Dassiefontein for an farm-like experience and a place to stock up on snacks and a home-baked bread made from flour ground on the premises and baked in a wood-stove.  Caledon has a Wimpy that is right next to the road but we usually just head to Riviersonderend where there are two popular stops. The Shell Diner is just the place to fill up, buy some magazines and treat the kids to Steers.  I was surprised to see a vending machine that resembled a mobile pharmacy with all the necessities that one sometimes forget to pack.  My favourite stop is the neighbouring Ou Meul Bakkery with good coffee and great pastries.  This

one-stop shop provides breakfast, cheeses, dried fruit, ground coffee, coffee pods, gifts and pastries – fresh and frozen ranging from cocktail to family size.  It is possible to drive straight through to Mossel Bay from here but there are a few other stops to make.  In Swellendam Tredici is an easy turn-off from the N2 with platters, gourmet sandwiches and deli items waiting.  A quality stop! Make sure to fill the car with goodies as Riversdal is another 90kms drive.  If you have time to spare turn into Riversdal to the town centre for a stop at the Old Jail.  The Old Jail is more of a leg-stretch stop than a culinary knock-out but the fresh milk-tart with a pot of tea provide motivation to tackle the last 90kms of this trip.  It’s time to get to Mossel Bay!
