C’est Très Bon @ Café BonBon, Franschhoek

On our way from Hermanus to the New School Grand Cru Chardonnay tasting at Môreson, Franschhoek, we made a stop for a bite of lunch at Café BonBon.  From the moment we entered this provencal property we were in awe.  Attention is paid to detail from the signage to the garden and table set-up.  Every mouthful was heaven and right till the last bite we were convinced that we will return soon for more BonBon goodness.

Apart from the menu they also had specials for the day. A notice stating that the belly pork was a favourite was enough to order a portion for main course.  It came perfectly done – no excess fat, crispy on top, tender right through.  The other main had to be the rump of lamb.  Devine fork loads with a layered load of lamb, artichoke, gnocchi and spinach disappeared and were shared across the table.  Slowly slowly, chewing, tasting, trying to make it last.

The savoury mains needed a sweet finish.  There were 2 desserts as well as impressive looking cakes on display.  We opted for the carrot ricotta cake which had my fork working fast and furious trying to claim a big stake of what was supposed to be a shared dessert.

Café BonBon’s patrons all looked very pleased with themselves for making the right choice for a lazy lunch.  Judging from the car park the majority of the guests were from Cape Town.  A Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, latest Range Rover, new S class Merc and Jaguar lined the exit.  This is certainly the ultimate weekend escape for city dwellers and an easy way to distress after a hard week’s work in town.
